Traveling from Singapore: Navigating the Current Landscape Amid the Middle East Crisis

For Singaporeans considering a holiday in the upcoming three months, the Middle East crisis has shifted from a geopolitical concern to a travel-related issue.

This situation has affected one of the world's busiest east-west aviation routes, directly impacting flight operations, costs, and the confidence to book trips at this time.

The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recommended that citizens postpone all travel to the Middle East, prompting Singapore Airlines and Scoot to cancel affected flights to Dubai and Jeddah until March 28.

However, not all travel plans need to be scrapped. Changi Airport remains well-connected, and airlines are adapting quickly.

Yet, for those traveling to Europe, the UK, or parts of North Africa, the previously simple notion of flying west is more complicated now. More routes are being redirected, some flights are experiencing longer durations, and finding affordable fares is becoming increasingly challenging.

Travelers in Singapore are already reevaluating long-haul travel plans due to this added uncertainty, particularly for journeys involving Middle Eastern airspace or connections through Gulf hubs.

Why Your Europe Holiday Might Now Cost More and Take Longer

The most significant change relates to routing. A considerable portion of Asia-Europe traffic typically transits through or around Middle Eastern airspace and Gulf hubs.

With closures, restrictions, and limited operations affecting key transit points, airlines have been forced to reroute flights, increase fuel use, adjust schedules, or cancel flights altogether. Reports indicate that these closures have disrupted travel through Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, while safety alerts persist in various parts of West Asia.

For travelers, this typically results in three key issues.

First, longer flight durations. Alternative routes around conflict-affected airspace can add anywhere from one to three hours or more, depending on the destination and aircraft type. AirHelp has reported that some long-haul flights are adding 60 to 120 minutes, while analysts cited by The Straits Times warn of longer journeys for Asia-Europe traffic in general.

Second, fewer straightforward one-stop options. Historically, Gulf carriers have made Europe feel within easy reach from Singapore, with seamless connections through Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi. Currently, this model is strained. AirHelp described Gulf carriers as experiencing operational paralysis in the early stages of the disruptions, and reports indicate that the closure of major Gulf hubs has driven up Asia-Europe ticket prices and left popular routes fully booked for days.

Third, increased fares. Airlines like Qantas and Air New Zealand have already raised prices due to the fuel crisis associated with the conflict. Cathay Pacific has also announced higher fuel surcharges on most routes starting March 18.

This doesn’t mean you should instinctively cancel your Europe trip. It does, however, suggest that you should budget more and expect less flexibility. A June city getaway to Barcelona or Milan may still go smoothly, but the days of casually booking the cheapest westbound itinerary with a Gulf stopover appear shaky for now.

If you're traveling during school holidays or around long weekends, consider booking earlier than usual and reviewing fare rules carefully before purchasing. The cheapest ticket may not be a bargain if it leads to being stranded in an unintended transit city.

The Best Holiday Strategies for the Next Three Months

If a simple, low-stress holiday from Singapore is your goal between now and June, regional travel is currently a more attractive option than long-haul trips.

This is partly because Southeast Asia and North Asia are more accessible without relying on conflict-affected transit routes and partly due to a trend among Singaporean travelers to focus on more value-driven, experiential planning in 2026.

YouGov's Singapore travel outlook suggests that rising costs are reshaping how Singaporeans view overseas vacations, while Skyscanner's 2026 travel trends indicate a growing interest in fresh, practical, and nearby destinations.

This makes locations such as Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Bangkok, Bali, Taipei, Ho Chi Minh City, and Kuala Lumpur particularly appealing right now. They are well-connected from Singapore, do not require transit through the Gulf, and can provide the kind of holiday many people desire in the coming months: great food, decent accommodations, short flight times, and reduced uncertainty.

If Europe remains your dream destination, look for flights that completely avoid Gulf transit. Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa have increased Singapore-Europe flights in March due to higher passenger demand on routes that circumvent the Middle East. This is a positive sign. While direct or more self-contained itineraries may cost more upfront, they can protect against a cascade of missed connections and last-minute alterations.

It’s also crucial to consider aircraft range and operational realities. Travel Weekly Asia reports that Qantas' Perth-London nonstop has had to make a refueling stop in Singapore after rerouting away from Middle Eastern airspace, serving as a reminder that even premium long-haul services can become less predictable when flight paths change.

Before You Book, Examine Refunds, Insurance, and Advisories More Closely

This is an area many travelers overlook until something goes awry, but it deserves more attention right now.

Start by reviewing official advisories. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' stance is clear: postpone all travel to the Middle East, and Singaporeans currently in the region are strongly urged to eRegister. The travel advisory pages for the UAE and Saudi Arabia reiterate this guidance.

So even if your airline is still operating, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a leisure trip is wise.

Next, review your ticket conditions. Scoot has stated that passengers impacted by its Jeddah cancellations can request a full refund or rebook on alternative flights. This flexibility is vital, and it’s beneficial to choose airlines or fares that clearly outline rebooking and refund options. Singapore Airlines has similarly cautioned that other flights may be affected as the situation evolves.

Insurance also requires closer examination. Income Insurance announced extra support for eligible customers affected by Middle East travel uncertainties on March 9, which is helpful, but travelers should not assume that every disruption will be automatically covered. For instance, FWD specifies that its travel insurance excludes countries where the MFA advises against travel or recommends postponement.

The best approach for the next three months is straightforward:

  • Keep holidays simple.

  • Prioritize direct flights whenever possible.

  • Avoid voluntary transits through the Middle East.

  • Allow for more time and budget when planning for Europe.

  • Purchase insurance only after thoroughly checking exclusions.

Avoid trips that require separate tickets, cruise departures, concert nights, or hotel bookings that cannot be altered.

Travel from Singapore remains feasible, exciting, and worth planning. However, for now, the smoothest holiday will likely be the one that demands the least from the global aviation landscape. In such times, choosing closer destinations can feel wiser, and a well-priced week in Bangkok, Bali, or Tokyo may offer travelers something more valuable than bragging rights: peace of mind.
